Zürich … RICHARD PHILLIPS …“BEST PICTURE” Galerie Gmurzynska, Zürich, October 5 – November 30, 2024

On the occasion of the ‘Zurich Film Festival’, Galerie Gmurzynska is presenting the new series by the renowned contemporary artist Richard Phillips in its gallery on Paradeplatz; the artist’s first solo exhibition in Zurich for 24 years.

Krystyna Gmurzynska, Mathias Rastorfer, Isabelle Bscher and Lucas Bscher opened the ‘Best Picture’ exhibition by renowned contemporary artist Richard Phillips, who travelled all the way from New York, at their Galerie Gmurzynska on Paradeplatz on the occasion of the Zurich Film Festival. This first solo exhibition by the artist in Zurich in 24 years features technically masterful portraits of celebrities who were nominated for major film awards in 2024, such as Cillian Murphy, Margot Robbie, Bradley Cooper and Emily Blunt.

Richard Phillips’ works critically examine themes such as sexuality, politics and celebrity as they are portrayed in the mass media. Phillips’ significance for contemporary painting and culture can be seen in his solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Zürich, the Kunstverein Hamburg, Gagosian and White Cube, among others. His works are not only collected by museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and the Tate Modern (London), but he is equally known for his groundbreaking interventions such as the film premiere at the 54th Venice Biennale, an integral cameo in ‘Gossip Girl’ and the Porsche Art Car 2023. This year, Phillips agreed to return to this iconic series for ‘The Wrap’, the renowned film and entertainment industry magazine, to catalogue the actors behind the year’s most impressive cinematic achievements.

The new series ‘2024 Nominees’, which will be shown at the Galerie Gmurzynska until the end of November, consists of twelve pastels and is being published for the first time as a printed folio.

Venice …. „The Description of the World“ … 24 August to 21 September 2024

Parallel to the 60th Venice Biennale, the German artist DIETMAR BRIXY presents his colourful oeuvre under the title “The Description of the World” in the magnificent Salone Sansoviniano of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana on Piazza San Marco.

With his solo exhibition ‘The Description of the World’, Mannheim-based artist Dietmar Brixy explores the theme of ‘foreignness’, moving between cultures and identities. Marco Polo – the 700th anniversary of whose death this year – also gave the exhibition its name.

The collection of antique globes and world maps as well as the Testament of Marco Polo in the splendid rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana provide an exciting platform for Brixy’s oil paintings from the ‘Happy’, ‘Reflect’ and ‘Journey’ series, as well as his tondi, the so-called ‘Bamboo Bubbles’, which take up the shape of the globes and are characterised with veritable explosions of colour and organic shapes inspired by nature.

Travelling and encounters with the diversity of foreign cultures have always been an inspiration for artists. Dietmar Brixy is also such a traveller, a seeker. Over the years, Brixy has developed a special approach to capturing his experiences and perceptions in his works. For this unique aesthetic formal language, which embodies movement, energy and change, the Mannheim-based artist experiments with different materials and techniques. His works, which have been recognised in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, are often large-scale and can be experienced both as paintings and installations.

Zürich … ATTERSEE – Schön wie seine Bilder … 14. März – 31. Mai 2024

Galerie Gmurzynska is showing a retrospective of the entire oeuvre of the legendary Austrian artist Christian Ludwig Attersee in its two Zurich exhibition spaces.

The exhibition brings together paintings and sculptures from the 1960s through to his latest, crossgenre paintings from today. Attersee’s independent and at the same time ground-breaking creative approach has survived through the forms of Viennese Actionism, Fluxus, international Pop and Dada, imaginatively infiltrating them with virtuoso technique and humorous innovations. His art has always had a special eye for motifs of consumption, love, male beauty and food.

Attersee’s works are generous, exciting, enriching stories for the viewer. Full of disarming eroticism and subversive humour, they transform and mix everything into twisted, seductive tales of highly sensual events. The artist captivates, entertains and surrounds the viewer with works bursting with bold colours and daring motifs. Max Hollein, Director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, describes Attersee’s work as follows: ‘An Attersee painting is always a celebration, an event, a boiling over with a new visual language, an inventive symbolism of life, love and nature. His paintings are meant to be seen, smelled, tasted and loved.’

The artist is primarily regarded as one of the leading representatives of figurative painting in Europe in the last 50 years, as a lone fighter in almost all areas of the visual arts, as a counterpart to Viennese Actionism and as the founder of ‘Neue Österreichische Malerei”.
