Brigitte Witzer’s paintings are large, very large. And they are intensely coloured and unusually luminous. They captivate the viewer for a number of reasons, one of which is the particular colourfulness achieved through the use of interference colours. She primes her canvases or the paper she works on with black. On this surface she works with interference colours. These colours only fully develop on a dark background, and they are unpredictable: As you move past the shimmering areas of colour, their colour changes and nothing remains as it seems. “My painting is about the interplay of colour and delicacy. I tame my will to express myself on a large canvas and surrender to the here and now. With the wild courage of colour, I deal cheerfully and fearlessly with uncertainty. This is the foundation on which my monotypes stand,” says the artist.
Brigitte Witzer works in the tradition of abstract expressionism. Emotion and spontaneity are more important to her than perfection, rationality and regimentation. “I am interested in sensual perception, perception with all the senses: hearing, tasting, smelling – not only, but also seeing, touching,” she says.
In her intense search for ‘the supremacy of pure feeling or perception in the visual arts’, Witzer was deeply influenced by her background, which included a degree in philosophy. This inspired her to see the possibilities of completely abstract art and led her to search for the most essential elements of art. “At first I found writing in deep dives a satisfying form of self-expression. But as I gained more and more insight into my person, my existence here and now, I fell into a relationship of radical expression through painting. Today I am happy to have found a strong position within myself that relies on intellectual and rational elements for facts (and less for decisions). I’ve learned to give in to emotional and spiritual impulses that qualify my decisions on a completely different level. I’m now a social person and I put my money where my mouth is. The contact with ratio, emotions and spirits gives peace and quality to my life, makes my daily life powerful and exciting. It does not come as a surprise: My themes are power, beauty, presence and personality,” says Brigitte Witzer.
